Why should I major in Chemistry?

If you're curious about our world and how things affect the human body and the environment, then chemistry is for you.

Chemistry is the study of the chemical composition of substances and its chemical reactions. The study of chemistry can apply to a wide variety of fields, including forensic analysis, environmental studies, medicine development and testing, chemical engineering, agriculture and food processing, and research into new energy sources.

What's the difference between a B.A. degree in Chemistry and a B.S. degree in Chemistry?

A B.A. in chemistry is for you if you want to pursue a career in chemistry, but don't plan to go to graduate school in chemistry or a related field. If you wish to pursue graduate studies in chemistry or a related field, then a B.S. in chemistry is the right choice.

What's Chemical Technology?

A B.A. degree in chemical technology is offered to students interested in a career as a technical assistant in a commercial, federal, or industrial laboratory setting. Many chemical technology graduates have become educators - teaching science to elementary, middle, or high school students.

Students need to get signatures of their advisors and the department chair. Some departments have specific requirements for students to be majors. Those requirements are listed below.

Requirements for Admission to a Major in Chemistry

To declare a major in chemistry, a student must have successfully completed the following chemistry courses:

  • CHE 107
  • CHE 108
